Mentor / SEN Support Worker

Overview

Can you inspire hope for the most vulnerable young people?

For some children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, attending school can feel impossible. Overwhelming classrooms, limited resources, and a lack of personalised support can result in them becoming disengaged or unable to attend entirely. That’s where you come in. The Reconnect Programme is looking for passionate, experienced individuals to work directly with these young people—offering them meaningful, engaging enrichment experiences outside of the traditional school setting.

About the Role

As a SEN Support Worker, you will deliver bespoke activity-based sessions, helping children to build confidence, connection, and independence through enrichment activities. You will work with students on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis, supported by our team to deliver a programme of activities tailored to each individual’s needs and interests. Sessions take place during school hours, and happen between 3–5 times per week, during term-time only. These sessions will be primarily at our Hub in Thurston but location can vary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a varied list of on and off-site activities tailored to student interests

  • travel/transport your student to various enrichment activity sites (mileage, business insurance top up, car camera will be provided).

  • Support children and young people with SEN/SEMH on 1:1 or 2:1 basis

  • Build trusting, consistent relationships to foster personal growth and reintegration readiness

  • Liaise with families, schools, and our internal team to ensure a joined-up approach

  • Maintain clear, accurate session records and risk assessments

  • Manage time efficiently and ensure reliable transport and punctuality

  • Contribute to individual learning plans and progress tracking

  • Maintain accurate records in line with safeguarding and reporting expectations

What You’ll Need

  • Experience supporting vulnerable children or young people with SEN and SEMH needs is essential

  • Proven ability to work independently and deliver high-quality, child-centred sessions

  • Is calm, patient, and resilient under pressure

  • Can build rapport quickly and maintain professional boundaries

  • Enhanced DBS check (essential) – must be in the last 12 months or willing to obtain

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle 

  • Strong timekeeping, organisational, and communication skills

  • Up-to-date safeguarding knowledge and a commitment to child safety
